Census House UPSC relevant
A census house is a building or part of a building used or recognised as a separate unit because it has a separate main entrance from the road, common courtyard or staircase.
It may be occupied or vacant, and used for residential, non-residential or mixed purposes — a shop, school or temple is a census house just as a flat is. Every census house gets a number during houselisting, and residents are obliged under the Census Act to allow this number to be painted on their house. The census house is the physical unit of Phase 1; the household (the people) is the social unit living in it, and one census house can contain several households.
In 2027, self-enumerated households still have their building number, census house number and use of census house recorded by the visiting enumerator.
