Enumeration Block (EB) UPSC relevant
The enumeration block is the basic building block of Population Enumeration: the compact area assigned to a single enumerator for the person-by-person count, designed for complete coverage without omission or duplication and equitable workload.
Norms used in Indian census and allied operations have put an EB at roughly 100–125 households with 650–700 persons (some documentation cites 120–150 households); the 2027 pre-test alone covered about 5,000 census blocks. EBs (and their Phase 1 counterparts, houselisting blocks) are the level at which census results are ultimately geo-coded, and in 2027 they are digitally delineated and geo-referenced for the first time.
EB boundaries also matter beyond the census: Election Commission house-to-house work and survey sampling frames routinely piggyback on census enumeration blocks.
