Million-Plus City UPSC relevant
A million-plus city is an urban agglomeration or standalone town with a population of one million (10 lakh) or more. In Census 2011, 53 of the 468 Class I UAs/towns crossed this threshold, and three — Greater Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata — exceeded ten million, a class often called mega cities.
The label has fiscal consequences: Finance Commission grants, AMRUT-type urban missions and clean-air programmes frequently target 'million-plus cities' as a category. Census 2027 will produce the first revised list in 16 years; given inter-censal growth, several UAs that were just below the line in 2011 are widely expected to join it, but no official 2027 figures exist yet — the new list will emerge only after Population Enumeration results are published.
